Finding a Lovely Saree Blouse to Pair with Your Saree
A saree and saree blouse (sometimes spelled sari) can be made from one of several different fabrics, including nylon, rayon or polyester, but traditionally they are made of silk or cotton.
You can buy a saree in a beautiful, jewel-like solid color or indulge your sense of fashion with an equally beautiful, elaborate floral, geometric, checked, striped or abstract pattern or brocade woven into the cloth.
Many Western women might not realize that a saree is actually a long strip of fabric which transforms itself into a ladies garment when it is carefully wrapped around a woman's body.
The saree fabric can be up to nine yards long and can be draped in several styles. Most sarees are worn wrapped around the woman's waist, with one end of the length of fabric (called the pallu) draped over her shoulder. In some styles of saree wrapping, all or part of the woman's midriff is bare.
A petticoat is usually worn beneath a saree, and the woman's upper torso is clothed with a cropped, low-necked, short-sleeved, tightly-fitted blouse known as a ravika or choli. The according blouse is worn beneath the saree.
The Saree Blouse
Traditionally, the blouse took a back seat to the beauty of the saree itself. Now, however, blouses for sarees have evolved and are more beautiful and adventurous than they were in the past.
Some of the dressier styles of blouses are single-shoulder, backless, or off-the-shoulder, halter neck, and they're not taking a back seat anymore. You can buy a saree blouse in a wide range of colors, from vivid deep colors to beautiful pastels to muted, darker tones.
Choli (saree blouses) are also available in a wide range of fabrics, including silk, satin, cotton, crepe, georgette and others. Some designer blouses are quite decorative and are embellished with fine embroidery, sequins, beads, crystals and so forth.
When you're searching for the right saree and blouse, the choices can be a bit overwhelming. And Indian sarees and blouses aren't the type of attire that you can just walk into any of your local stores and buy.
